Contest: Level Concept Art

Postby Titan1x77 » Fri Dec 14, 2007 12:49 am

We are looking for new concept art based on Renegade's original levels, this is intended to give the old maps a new theme or improved look. We don't want new layout ideas, just a new overall theme and look for each of Renegade's stock maps.

You may use real world photography in conjunction with a detailed drawing. Choose any way to show off how you'd imagine a classic renegade level would look like in the next gen. The winner(s) will have his/her art created in 3d for our mod.

For example: C&C_City_Flying with a run down set of apartment buildings, with alleys instead of tunnels, but the gameplay and layout of the map stays the same.

The maps below are available...
Under
Field
Mesa
Canyon
Complex
Glacier Flying
Walls Flying
City Flying
Islands
Volcano
Winners will be posted in 2 months on February 13th 08' , Post and discuss entries here!

Hello guys, nice to meet you. I will try to make the Level Drawings for you.

EDIT: If I make a drawing of a map Volcano, does it has to have of mountains?

The outline of all these maps should basically be the same, these drawings are a theme thing - like how you would imagine the map if it were real.

If you want to draw Volcano, draw any part of the map you want.

Also would it be good if I added barrels, supply boxes, anything millitary related in the map?

In the mist of the brutal battle between GDI and Nod, in a strategically important city, Nod utalized a new strategy that they have been holding back for quite some time. In the middle of a battle for control of the middle of this city; GDI pushed forward harder then before, victory seemed almost thiers..... Until it landed. A large tiberium meteor was dropped from Nod controled supply plane. Its crashed through the local bridge and killed many a GDI soldier from its intense Tiberium radiation strewn about from impact. This one desperate act from the Brotherhood bought them enough time to regroup and repair the damages recieved to their buildings.

The initial strewn Tiberium radiation has faded. The forces of GDI and Nod are prepared to fight for this city once more. Who will you fight for?

(heh I just had to add a little story )

Nice nice
as soon as I read it or rather as soon as I saw the hourglass map I thought about Under. (was I hook? yes I was and still am)

Concept
Theme for the Map hum ... Base under Snowy Mountain fighting for Tiberium.
Rail Road Bridge covered in Snow, crossing over the Tiberium field. The section over the Tiberium Field was destroyed, devastated by a piece of the Tiberium meteoroids. Mountain Basin Shape, surrounds the Main Battle field with mountain cliff.
Bunker to house or Bunker to Watch Tower or just Bunker, hum don't know which is good.

Now I do have a question we want to keep it high tech?
From the Screen shot I can tell it's semi-futuristic, am I right or am I mistaken?

oh um .... can I make simple 3D Maps for sample?

Kusutto, you can use anything you wish, 3d/2d real life photos... Just have it depict your ideas on how "under" should look.

Remember this is concept on how these classic maps would look, so far nothing is worth using as concept art. Sorry, we need amazing photos or drawings of what these maps should resemble.

Color them, pencil sketches are nice to start a map from, but not to model around.

This could of been a Red alert concept map or something...we could model the buildings and bridge to match the art work.
Image

In this example, we could use the jungle theme for maybe a map like under?

Image

and this one we could use the theme of dead dinosaurs and huts on a map like field.

Image

Finally there is a ton of real world photography we can use as a theme for our levels, for example, this could represent a look for canyon

Image

or city flying with an middle east feel to it

So you dont have to be an artist to make something that suits your imagination of what you think a classic map should look like, make a collage of photos or draw or block out something in 3d, it doesnt matter how, just have something that catches the eye.

Also, gameplay must stay as close as possible, example, city flying will still have the same paths and large bridge, but it could be more room inside the tunnels or the bridge could be damaged or have ice hanging from it as if it's winter.

Hope I'm clear on what we like to see with this contest.

Do maps, or should maps have the same climate as they did in Renegade? Like for example, in Renegade, Walls was a desert map - is it ok, or would it be allowed for it to be maybe a snow map in a concept?

This is just a question, not that I am actually working on anything.

Titan would know the exact details. But I think its okay, as long as the layout is relatively intact. Changing the climate i believe is just the matter of personal theme preferences. So if you really want to go ahead and try it, than go for it.

Personally I am very interested to see under, and what you guys would do with that map. It was the demo map, and i still remember dling the demo and trying it online for the first time. It has a special meaning to myself, and a lot of renegade players.

btw, kusutto, the maps in Ren werent at all very high tech or futuristic at all. They were just missing the realism because each map was very symmetrical. I am also very interested in your idea of under. Looking forward to it! 8)

Ooh, a Junlge R07_Under would actually work very well if it used ancient ruins for the caves and tunnels. I actually rather like the idea of reinventing some of the maps.

Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.

The way I think of it is like how Bungie took some of the maps from Halo and put them into Halo 2 all new and transformed like.
