Demorecording Guide - How to record matches/bugs

Postby RypeL » Tue Oct 20, 2009 8:09 pm

In Renegade-X you dont have to use a recording program like Fraps while playing to record your matches. In RenX you can do the recording with a program like Fraps when watching a replay AFTER the match. You can use ingame technology to record a replay(which is called a 'demo' in Unreal Engine 3) of your matches just for your viewing pleasure, to show your matches to others or, which is why i post this here, to report bugs/imbalances (or to post demos of youre favorite rushes etc B) ). I would like to give you a short overview of the currently available options you have to record and watch your Renegade-X Matches. I say "currently available options" cause we plan to expand them quite a lot in the future. Before i came to Renegade-X i have been working on new demofeatures for different Unreal Engine titles since 2005 and so Renegade-X will be pimped in that area aswell of course :P

How to record a demo:
Open the console by pressing F10 and type "demorec xxx" (without the braces) with 'xxx' beeing whatever you want to call your demo. You can start recording a demo at any given time in a match. You can only record one demo at a time.

How to stop recording a demo:
Open the console by pressing F10 and type "demostop". Just that. The demo will then be saved in your MyDocuments/MyGames/UnrealTournament3/UTGame/Demos folder.

How to watch a demofile:
Open the console by pressing F10 and type "demoplay xxx" with 'xxx' beeing the name of the demofile. Any demofile that is in your MyDocuments/MyGames/UnrealTournament3/UTGame/Demos can be watched like that. If a friend sends you a demo put it in that folder and you can watch it. If the demos were recorded with a different Renegade-X version than you have installed, then you cant watch them though. Just keep that in mind.

What a demo will currently show you is the game from your perspective. You should watch it in the thirdperson view 'F' key, cause the firstperson view isent optimized yet. We will offer functionality to switch to a freeview spectator perspective and possible other players perspectives later.

- You can pause a demo by pressing the 'Pause' key.
- You can change the speed of the demo by opening the console (F10) and typing "demoslomo x", with 'x' beeing a number between 0.0 and 1.00 for the speed of the demo. Anything below 1.0 will slow the demo down. Anything beyond 1.0 will speed the demo up. You can bind those commands to keys by editing the UTInput.ini file in your MyDocuments/MyGames/UnrealTournament3/Renegade/Config folder.

Keep in mind that demos can have bugs on their own.

This topic will get updated when we offer more functionality in this area.

Roughly, how large are the file sizes involved? Let's say, for a 5 min demo.

Roughly 1-2 MB per Minute. A full match should be about 10 - 20 MB.

Is the resolution the same as the current setting you play?
What container is it exported to? .avi?

I don't think it's a video in a true sense. It's more like recorded data of a match that your pc will reproduce when you want to see the replay.

Yes it is basically just text data that the Engine records and then uses to recreate the game. Everything is rendered again when you watch the demo, so you can change resolution/graphics settings etc. BUT you can also record the action from the demo to a video format of course with Fraps for example. Thats the normal way most videos in UT history were made and should be made.

I mean just try it if youre not sure what it would look like. You can try it out in seconds: When your playing the game just type 'demorec xxx', wait a few seconds to record a short test then type 'demostop' and then type 'demoplay xxx' and then just see what happens and watch.
In future updates you will be able to move the camera freely to watch the action from all angles etc as you can see in our 'New Years trailer' for example. For that trailer we recorded demos of our testmatches and then picked camera angeles in the demos and then recorded it with a Tool that makes a video file out of it.

This is really an outcome for me because my FPS drops to 10 - 20 while recording live.

It shouldnt matter when recording a demo :)

thanks for the info!

If you make a demo and then make another demo with the same name, will it overwrite the old demo or will it save it seprerately with a number attached to it? (Like demo001, for example).

that worked excellent. loved how you could pan all around your guy in any direction while it was playing and super small file. keep up the good work.
